313,614. Angel International Corporation. June 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Fastenings.-In machines for filling and sealing paper and like receptacles, a clamping strip is formed and secured on the collapsed end of the receptacle. The strip W of metal is drawn from a roll 124, Fig. 7, between a flanged guide roll 127 and over a die block 130, Fig. 25, formed with a rib 131 of progressively increasing V-shaped cross-section. A complemental member comprising a plate 132, conforming in shape to the rib 131, is pivoted at 133 and is adapted to be retained in operative position by a latch 136. The strip is drawn forward past rollers 148 by feed rollers 139, 140, partly shown in Fig. 28. The roller 139 is formed with a V-shaped peripheral recess corresponding to the formation of the strip, and the roller 140 is formed at the top of a rib with serrations which co-operate with corresponding serrations at the bottom of the recess in the other roller, so as to facilitate the feeding of the strip and to reinforce the bend by crimping at 147. A length is severed from the strip to form a closure by the apparatus shown in Fig. 22. After leaving the rolls 139, 140, the strip passes between longitudinally adjustable blocks 150, 151, and into a recess in vertically reciprocable blocks 157, 157<1>, then in alignment with the blocks 150, 151. The blocks 157, 157<1> are mounted on a head 162 adapted to be depressed into the position shown by a cam 174 so as to shear off the strip carried between the blocks. After the next upward movement, the feeding of the strip by the rollers 139, 140 delivers a severed portion between the jaws of the collapsing and securing mechanism.
