The target, e.g. a submarine, ship or torpedo, is tracked from another vessel. All data are associated with a common time frame. With the aid of a land based- and/or satellite positioning system, readings of positions and bearings of vessel and target, are taken at intervals. From this data, positions, bearings and ranges are calculated. Data from the navigation system of the vessel is used to compute track positions of a preferably-smoothed reference target path. The target reference: path, bearings, positions, ranges and velocities, are used to determine a target reference course. By comparison with corresponding actual data (especially relayed by radio from target), a measurement of the discrepancy is derived.
