PURPOSE: A manufacturing method of a linear polyphenylene oxide is provided to economically and simply manufacture the polyphenylene oxide with the high molecular weight through the oxidation polymerization of 2,6-dialkylphenol. CONSTITUTION: A manufacturing method of a linear polyphenylene oxide comprises a step of oxidation polymerizing 2,6-dialkylphenol, using a metal as a catalyst. The 2,6-dialkylphenol is selected from the group consisting of 2,6-dimethyl phenol, 2,6-diethylphenol, 2,6-dipropyl phenol, 2-methyl-6-ethylphenol, 2-methyl-6-propylphenol, 2-methyl-6-isopropylphenol, 2-methyl-6-butylphenol, 2-ethyl-6-propylphenol, 2-ethyl-6-isopropylphenol, and 2-ethyl-6-butylphenol.
