Support base 1 is for upstanding items such as road signs and has a sleeve 2, a base structure 3 consisting of lower and upper base plates, and at least three legs extending out from the base structure and being foldable to a collapsed and substantially "flat" position of the support base (by typically not extending more than 150mm vertically when knocked over). The lower base plate has a means for orienting the upstanding item in a particular orientation, typically in the form of a truncated pyramid shape (not shown) centred on and within the spigot so as to prevent rotation of a square section tubular member of the upstanding item.
