A method for welding together two alloy steel pieces 202, 204 comprises buttering the surface of the first alloy steel metal piece 202 with a nickel-based filler metal at a thickness sufficient to isolate a heat-affected zone in the first alloy steel metal piece 202 from subsequent welding to produce a first buttered surface, heat-treating the heat-affected zone in the first alloy steel metal piece to produce a heat-treated first buttered surface 206, buttering the surface of the second alloy steel metal piece 204 with the nickel-based filler metal at a thickness sufficient to isolate a heat-affected zone in the second alloy steel metal piece 204 from subsequent welding to produce a second buttered surface, and heat-treating the heat-affected zone in the second alloy steel metal piece 204 to produce a heat-treated second buttered surface 208, and welding the heat-treated first buttered surface to the heat-treated second buttered surface with the nickel-based filler metal 210. |
