PURPOSE: A negative electrode material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, a manufacturing method thereof, and a lithium ion secondary battery are provided to maintain the low volume swelling rate and the high battery capacity of a silicon oxide. CONSTITUTION: A negative electrode material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is a composite particle formed by etching a coated particle including silicon nano particles dispersed to a silicon oxide, and being coated with a carbon coating. The average diameter of the composite particle is 0.1~50 microns. The BET non-surface area of the composite particle is 0.5~100 m^2/g.
