Disclosed is an apparatus for removing an alkyl halide from a gas volume, the apparatus comprising: a reactor assembly comprising a reaction vessel containing a single continuous liquid phase comprising water and a nucleophile, and one or more gas dispersers having therein a plurality of holes, the holes being between 1 and 200 micrometers across at a widest part thereof, said one or more dispersers being capable of converting a gas stream obtained from the gas volume into small bubbles and immersed in the liquid phase and positioned so that the small bubbles rise through a column of the liquid phase and reach an upper surface of the liquid phase, the alkyl halide being carried into the liquid phase. Also disclosed is a method of removing an alkyl halide from a gas volume, the method comprising: withdrawing a gas stream from the gas volume; passing the gas stream through one or more gas dispersers having therein a plurality of holes, the holes being between 1 and 200 micrometers across at a widest part thereof, thereby producing gas bubbles; and passing the bubbles through a continuous liquid phase contained in a reaction vessel, the liquid phase comprising water and a nucleophile, to produce a purified gas stream..
