Transmission mode selection, precoding and SDMA support

A method for enhancing performance in a wireless communication environment is disclosed. The method comprises: receiving a user preference for a transmission mode; associating the user preference with an entry or entries in a codebook, where the codebook is notified from a base station to a mobile device; and assigning the user to a transmission mode corresponding to the entry or entries. A method of determining a user's preference of a transmission mode is also disclosed. The method comprises: selecting a transmission mode or modes from a codebook to apply, where the codebook is notified from a base station to a mobile device; and transmitting an identifier of the mode or modes selected.
