PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with a color fading function including a function of fading an image and a function of determining pass/fail of a color fading state of the faded image. SOLUTION: A paper feed cassette 33 holds paper on which an image is formed with color fadable toner (R) and that is no longer used as a document. In a color fading device 40 arranged between a standby roller pair 37 for feeding the paper and a secondary transfer section where a secondary transfer roller 19 is arranged, preliminary heating rollers 41 having a built-in heat source arranged facedly while gripping a conveyance route a convey and preliminarily heat the paper, an LED head 42 for color fading on the downstream fades the image by color fading light radiation of a color fading wavelength, and a color fading detecting sensor 43 on the downstream thereof detects the reflected light of the color fading radiation light. When the color fading state by the detection result is pass, a new image is transferred to paper by the secondary transfer section, is fixed by a fixing unit 4, and is delivered to a paper delivering tray 45.
