<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To break up or restore secret information on a huge extension field on an arbitrary small-scale finite field. <P>SOLUTION: Secret information (m-dimensional vector) on an extension field GF(q<SP>m</SP>) is divided into partial secret information on m GF(q) to generate random numbers on m(k-1) GF(q). Next, a companion matrix corresponding to a primitive polynomial f(x) of m-th degree on GF(q)[x] and its power are generated, the partial secret information and the random numbers are operated on GF(q) in accordance with a combination determined on the basis of a configuration of the companion matrix and the power, and mn (n is a positive integer) pieces of partial breakup information are outputted.
