PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform high-speed retrieval and direct reproduction of an AV file recorded in a linear recording medium such as a data tape. SOLUTION: An AV index 300 is added in addition to a file index 111. The information thereof is specific to the AV file. A thumbnail image file 301 and a proxy video file 302 associated with the AV file are continuously arranged in the AV index file 300, and information on all the AV files recorded in the tape is held in a latest AV index.
