PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce manufacturing cost and power consumption and to improve user-friendliness, in a playback device. SOLUTION: When a monitoring time elapses from the start of content playback (YES in S3), a hard disk recorder displays a warning message (S4). When a remote controller is operated to stop playback (YES in S10), playback is stopped (S11), and standby monitoring processing (S12) is performed. When the remote controller is not operated from the time when the monitoring time elapses to the time when a non-operation monitoring time elapses (NO in S5), content playback is stopped (S6), resume information is generated and stored (S7), and standby mode is entered for turning off the power source of a peripheral circuit of a controlling microcomputer (S8).
