PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus or the like, capable of properly detecting the direction of characters by detecting the character spacing of a document (image) input. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes: a scanner unit 22 for input of an image containing characters; a character direction recognizing unit 26 for recognizing the direction of character alignment of the image by creating histograms of a main scanning direction and an auxiliary scanning direction out of the pixel pattern of the image; and an image rotation process unit 28 for rotating the image according to the user' setting based on the direction recognized by the character direction recognizing unit.
