PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize and thin an observation optical system enabling a user to observe one synthetic enlarged image by synthesizing light beams from a plurality of original images (display elements). SOLUTION: The observation optical system presents the synthetic enlarged image by guiding light beams from the first display element 1 that displays the first original image and the second display element 2 that displays the second original image to an exit pupil 7. The optical system includes a first optical element 3 on which the light beam from the first display element is made incident, a second optical element 4 on which the light beam from the second display element is made incident, and a third optical element 5. The light beam from a first display area in the second display element is guided to the exit pupil through the second optical element and at least the first optical element out of the first and third optical elements, and the light beam from a second display area different from the first display area in the second display element is guided to the exit pupil through the second optical element and the third optical element without through the first optical element.
