PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem, in a projection image display device, that incompatibility is caused in a video because luminance of white to color is too strong in a high-luminance mode in which white component addition is large, and the color is naturally displayed but luminance is lowered in a high image quality mode in which a quantitative rate of the white component addition is decreased, consequently, a user must perform operation to switch an image quality mode, and frequent switching is required according to content, so that the operation becomes troublesome. SOLUTION: The projection image display device includes: a color wheel 6; a DMD driving part 3 and a color wheel driving part 5 functioning as a display device-driving part for displaying the video by driving the color wheel 6 according to an input video signal while performing the white component addition; a coloring degree detection part 7 detecting a coloring degree from the input video signal; and a white component addition amount controller 8 controlling the quantitative rate of the white component addition in the DMD driving part 3 according to the coloring degree detected by the coloring degree detection part 7.
