The microcontroller- or microprocessor unit has a register or a memory, which contains bit fields for defining selected current consumption modes. Certain bit fields directly control one or multiple current consumption modes and some special bit fields define pointers on a current consumption-mode-defining register. Each pointer selects an appropriate bit field in the current consumption-mode-defining register. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a microcontroller- or microprocessor unit.
