PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane element capable of maintaining stable separation performance over a long term by preventing the deposit of turbid matter or the like from being unevenly distributed to the upstream side. SOLUTION: The separation membrane element comprises: a separation membrane (1); a permeation side passage material (3); and a fluid collection pipe (5) which is disposed in parallel with the flow direction (FD) of supply fluid to be supplied to the separation membrane (1) and causes permeation fluid to flow thereinto from the permeation side passage material (3), wherein at least one side of the separation membrane (1) and the permeation side passage material (3) is divided into at least two areas (3b, 3c) by a fluid interception part (20) disposed toward the fluid collection pipe (5) from the edge part (3a) remotest from the fluid collection pipe (5) and, in a region in which the fluid in the area (3b) of the uppermost stream side is passable, the length in the direction parallel to the flow direction (FD) of the supply fluid decreases toward the fluid collection pipe (5) from the edge part (3a) remotest from the fluid collection pipe (5).
