PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more accurately specify a region of a subject in an image.

SOLUTION: A subject map generation unit 21 generates a subject map indicating subject-likeness in respective regions of an input image from the input image. A gradient map generation unit 22 generates a gradient map indicating the degree of change in the subject-likeness in the subject map. A threshold processing unit 23 and a threshold processing unit 24 make threshold maps by carrying out binarization of a gradient map by using a high threshold THh and a low threshold THl. A synthesized map generation unit 25 generates a synthesized map indicating the subject-likeness in respective regions of the input image by regarding the region including the region specified as subject-like according to the threshold map with the high threshold THh among the regions specified as subject-like according to the threshold map with the low threshold THl as the region of the subject. This invention can be applied to an image processor.
