PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a lithium-based (Li-N-H-based) hydrogen storage material exhibiting excellent hydrogen release properties under conditions of≥4% released amount of hydrogen and≤260°C hydrogen release temperature in a hydrogen production method for converting a raw material comprising a mixture of LiNH<SB>2</SB>and LiH into lithium imide (Li<SB>2</SB>NH) and hydrogen. SOLUTION: When a mixture raw material obtained by adding a catalyst to the raw material comprising the mixture of LiNH<SB>2</SB>and LiH is crushed in the hydrogen production method for converting the raw material comprising the mixture of LiNH<SB>2</SB>and LiH into lithium imide (Li<SB>2</SB>NH) and hydrogen, the mixture raw material is crushed under a crush condition satisfying G≥1 and 1<GT/w<70 (wherein G (m/sec<SP>2</SP>) is the gravitational acceleration to be imparted to a crushing medium of a crushing apparatus; T (hr) is a crushing time; w (g) is the weight of the mixture raw material to be crushed).
