PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-vehicle navigation system and route guidance display method, having a function of displaying a route guidance, capable of facilitating grasp of the outline of a route required by a user, even when a guidepath up to a destination is long and there are a large number of guide points. SOLUTION: The on-vehicle navigation system includes display means; own-vehicle position detection means of detecting own-vehicle position; map data storage means of storing map information including information of roads and guide points; control means of searching for a guidepath from own-vehicle position to a destination; and storage means of storing a selection criterion for selecting a road or a guide point on the guidepath. The control means prepares simple guide data in which the number of roads and guide points on the guidepath have been reduced, based on the guidepath, map information and selection criterion and a simplified guidepath guidance according to simple guidance data, is displayed on a screen of the display means.
