PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure determination device accurately determining a failure of a knocking sensor while securing determination frequency and inhibiting a cost increase due to the addition of an open circuit detection means or the like. SOLUTION: Vibration due to the seating of an intake valve 3 of a valve train is detected by a knocking sensor 8, and it is determined based on the detection result whether the knocking sensor 8 is normal or not. At first, it is determined whether an engine operation state is in a knocking control area or not. When it is determined that the engine operation state is out of the knocking control area, a knocking sensor signal detection section W2 for failure determination which is a section overlapping seating timing of the intake valve 3 is calculated. Then, frequency components are calculated from knocking sensor signal detected by the knocking sensor 8 in the detection section W2 for failure detection, and it is determined based on the frequency components whether the knocking sensor 8 is normal or not.
