Provided are a liquid crystal display apparatus (1) and a method for driving the same wherein even if a backlight (15) is blinked and its lighting intervals are changed, the boundaries of images can be clearly viewed during a motion video display. The liquid crystal display apparatus (1) comprises a liquid crystal panel (13) and the backlight (15) that irradiates light onto the liquid crystal panel. The liquid crystal display apparatus (1) has lighting and shutoff time periods of the backlight (15) in a single frame period and changes the lengths of the lighting and shutoff time periods, thereby changing the lighting intervals of the backlight (15) to change the brightness. The liquid crystal display apparatus (1) further comprises an OS processing circuit (11) that establishes the magnitude of a drive voltage to be applied to the liquid crystal panel (13) during a gray scale transition, thereby controlling the drive voltage to be applied to the liquid crystal panel (13). The OS processing circuit (11) sets the magnitude of the drive voltage, which is to be applied to the liquid crystal panel (13) during the gray scale transition, to be the greater, the longer the lighting time period of the backlight (15) is under a condition that the gray scales before and after the transition are equal in the case where the lighting time period of the backlight (15) is changed.
