The method involves preheating a coil (W1,W2) of the gas discharge lamp (La) for a predetermined preheating time. A characteristic physical parameter for the type of gas discharge lamp is determined at the end of the preheating time and the measured value of the parameter is provided. The lamp type is determined on the basis of the provided measured value. The preheating time is extended for a predetermined period of time. An independent claim is also included for an electronic ballast with a preheating device for operating different types of gas-discharge lamps.
