Methods are provided for controlling microorganisms in water systems that contain reducing agent(s). The methods comprise treating the water system with an effective amount of a compound of the formula I: wherein X, R and R1 are as defined herein. A method for controlling microorganisms in a water system, the method comprising treating the water system with an effective amount of a compound of formula (I):(Formula I); wherein X is halogen; and R and R1 are, respectively, hydroxyalkyl and a cyano radical (-C=N), or R and R1 are, respectively, hydrogen and an amido radical of the formula: (Formula II), wherein the water system contains a reducing agent such as a sulfite, a bisulfite or a sulfide.
