If specific demands are made on the surface and the contour accuracy of the cavities in cast workpieces, the surface of the cores must be particularly smooth and have a particularly precise contour. The casting material must not react with the surface of a core, must not penetrate the surface and must not erode the same. According to the invention, the surface of the cores is therefore coated in at least one partial region with a layer made of water-soluble salt or mixtures of water-soluble salts, optionally additionally mixed with additives that are entirely soluble in water, and the layer is formed in two steps, wherein in the first step a surface activation for receiving the substances to be applied takes place in at least one partial region of the surface of the cores, and in a second step the substances are applied to the predetermined surface region and said substances are bound on the surface of the salt cores.
