The method involves providing a polymer optical fiber from backscattering measurement data, and determining a measured scattering profile from the backscattering measurement data. A mechanical model of the polymer optical fiber is provided, where the mechanical model is utilized to describe a time course of the backscatter behavior of the polymer optical fiber. A determination of the time course of the backscattering behavior is made based on the mechanical model, and the determined time course of the backscattering behavior is compensated. An independent claim is also included for a measuring device comprising a polymer optical fiber.
