PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which prevents an image failure by preventing foreign matters from sticking to an image carrier without using a complicated configuration. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 is equipped with: an image forming section P having a photoreceptor drum 2, a charging roller 3, an exposure unit 4, a developing unit 5 and a transfer roller 17; and a cleaning unit 9 that is arranged on the upstream side of the charging roller 3 and on the downstream side of the transfer roller 17 in the rotating direction of the photoreceptor drum 2, and has a cleaning blade 21. After printing is finished, foreign matters on the photoreceptor drum 2 that are accumulated in the periphery of the cleaning blade 21 are released on the downstream side from the cleaning blade 21 in the rotational direction of the photoreceptor drum 2 by making the coefficient of dynamic friction of the photoreceptor drum 2 greater than that in printing and then rotating the photoreceptor drum 2.
