PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a forced initialization operation once on a plurality of fields in a stable manner so as to display images of high quality and high contrast. SOLUTION: A method for driving a plasma display panel in which one field includes first subfields SF2 to SF11 for applying sustain pulses to a pair of display electrodes, during a sustaining period and then applying a voltage having an ascending waveform to a scanning electrode; a second subfield SF1 for applying a voltage having an ascending waveform without applying a sustain pulse during a sustaining period; and a subfield, next to the second subfield, including an initializing period, when a forced initialization operation is performed to forcedly generate an initialization discharge, by applying a voltage having a waveform ascending up to a predetermined voltage Vi2, at which initialization discharge is made to occur on the scanning electrodes and an ascending voltage to a data electrode, at the same time, and then applying a descending voltage to the scanning electrode.
