PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize an optical system of a confocal observation device. SOLUTION: A confocal endoscope includes a scanning fiber 32. The scanning fiber 32 is optically connected to a laser light source and a first light receiving unit through an optical coupler at a base end thereof. Exciting light emitted from the laser light source is emitted from the top end of the scanning fiber 32. The reflected light of the exciting light and/or fluorescence generated by the exciting light is made incident on the top end of the scanning fiber 32. The scanning fiber 32 transmits the reflected light and the fluorescence to the first light receiving unit. The top end of the scanning fiber 32 is formed in a spherical shape.
