A vehicle like a car has an operating device with an area/touch-pad (14) fitted with touch sensors and mechanical switches/five keys (16,17) to enable multiple operator control actions. When this area is touched with a finger, a control signal can be generated to operate a vehicle depending on the point where the screen is touched. A control signal can be generated with each of the switches that fit on an edge (14') of the area with the touch sensors.
