PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner that can reduce electric power consumption by turning off energization to a dirt detection means, when it is not needed, which consumes electric power due to an instable initial operation. SOLUTION: The air cleaner includes: an air intake; a filter 4 as a cleaning means that cleans dirty air taken in from the air intake; a fan motor 5 as an air blowing means for ventilating this filter 4; a gas sensor 8 as the dirt detection means for detecting dirt components in the air; a power unit for supplying power to the gas sensor 8; a controller for controlling on/off of power supply to the gas sensor 8 from the power unit; and a human detection sensor 9a as a human detection means for detecting presence/no presence of a person. During the time when the human detection sensor 9a detects no presence of a person, the controller is designed to turn off power supply to the gas sensor 8 from the power unit.
