The method involves operating LED chains (20, 20') in a current condition (100) with a constant stream. The LED chains are switched from the current condition into a voltage condition. The LED chains with a constant voltage are operated in the voltage condition. Total current value of the LED chains during voltage condition is measured. The LED chains are switched to the current condition. The total current value is compared with a standard value to detect a loss of LEDs (21, 21') in the LED chains. An independent claim is also included for a detection system for detecting a loss of an LED, comprising a regulated current source.
