The turbocharger has a shaft (300), by which a turbine (200) is connected with a compressor (100) for transmission of torque to the compressor. The shaft is supported by a magnetic bearing (400,500) in contactless manner. The shaft is provided in a cross section, and has an asymmetry, such that a periodic signal is generated in the coils (410,510) of the magnetic bearing during a rotation of the shaft around the longitudinal axis. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling power of a component of a turbocharger of a piston engine.
