A protection system and a method based on the passive optical network are provided by this invention, the system includes: a setting module, for setting the standby fiber and standby optical port; a protection server, for receiving the fault message from the fiber link terminal, and transmitting the control message based on the fault message, wherein the fault message indicating the failed fiber and/or the failed optical port, the control message indicating that the failed fiber and/or the failed optical port will be switched to the standby fiber and/or the standby optical port; the protection device, for receiving the control message from the protection server, and implementing the switching according to the control message. The problem of resource waste which is caused by the protection mechanism of the optical access system is solved through this invention, so the efficiency of usage of the optical network device is improved.
