Hoist apparatus (2) is provided for moving a first object relative to the apparatus and/or for moving the apparatus relative to a surface. The hoist apparatus (2) includes support means (24,26,28,30) for supporting the first object relative to the apparatus (2) and/or the apparatus (2) relative to a surface in use and drive means (52) for driving movement of the support means (24,26,28,30). At least three separate support means (24,26,28,30) are provided with said apparatus (2) for supporting said at least first object and/or said apparatus (2).
