A navigation system (1) for providing emergency information while travelling through a tunnel (52) comprises a terminal (8) coupleable with at least one camera (16) which is adapted for capturing images, an analyzing unit (12) coupled with the terminal (8) for receiving data of the at least one camera, wherein the analyzing unit (12) analyses a respective one of the images and detects safety related features (21 - 24) included in the images, and a position determination unit (6) for calculating and monitoring a position while moving through the tunnel (52). The analyzing unit (12) is further adapted for allocating the detected safety related features (21 - 24) to a respective corresponding monitored position and for matching the detected safety related features to map data (60). An information providing unit (13) provides emergency information (31 - 33) to be provided to a user based on the detected safety related features and the map data.
