Uranium rods are surrounded by and insulated from collecting electrodes which, when the device is incorporated in a nuclear reactor, is given an electrical potential by the #-radiations from the fissionable material. The electrodes are of copper, aluminium, beryllium, carbon, lead and bismuth. The insulating material may be quartz, glass, mica, polystyrene or the space may be evacuated. The collecting electrodes may have the form either of cylinders concentric with the uranium rods or a cluster of separate rods surrounding and parallel with the uranium element.</p> |
