The method of coding a multi-dimensional digital signal of a first resolution into sub-bands of a second resolution that is lower than the first resolution comprises:
- a step (410, 415) of generating a first sub-band of the second resolution,
- a step (420 to 435) of generating a first intermediate sub-band of an intermediate resolution that is higher than the second resolution and lower than the first resolution, based on said first sub-band of the second resolution,
- a step (440, 450) of determining at least first orientations (OH, OHH) based on said first intermediate sub-band and
- a step (445 and 455 to 460) of generating at least one second sub-band of the second resolution based on said orientations.
