The flexible conveyor belt, designed to lie flat when at rest, is made from layers of an elastomer material with internal reinforcing elements comprising one layer (10) of lengthwise cables, a second layer of transverse cables, providing lengthwise and transverse strength respectively, and a layer (14) of narrow transverse strips providing resistance to transverse compression. When the belt is at rest the transverse strips (14) all lie in the same plane, while gaps between their sections allow the belt to fold in the transverse plane according to the position of supporting rollers beneath it and partially or wholly enclose the articles or material being transported. The belt is made, for example, from vulcanised rubber, while the cables can be of metal or textile, including synthetic, fibres. The narrow strips are generally of metal.
