The device has an open tubular cage (1) fixed on a support. The cage comprises a lateral envelope (7) maintained remotely from the support. An upper edge (7a) is integrated to a cover (5). The lateral envelope is made of a flexible material of a net type. The lateral envelope is integrated to an extensible deformable structure (8). The lateral envelope is extensible in an axial direction to occupy a folded state in which the net is flattened and an unfolded state in which the net is maintained in extension. An independent claim is also included for a method for installing a protecting device.
