PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resting device of a cylinder capable of reducing resistance generated by compressing and/or expanding gas existing in a resting cylinder, when a piston on the resting cylinder reciprocates in the cylinder. SOLUTION: This resting device is provided for resting and operating an object cylinder being a partial cylinder of a multicylinder engine while operating a residual cylinder. The resting device has a valve system means for opening-closing an object valve being at least a partial valve of an intake valve and an exhaust valve of the object cylinder in response to a cycle of the object cylinder in operation for operating the object cylinder together with the residual cylinder and holding an opening state regardless of the cycle of the object cylinder in resting for resting the object cylinder while operating the residual cylinder.
