PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display for lowering a drive voltage and improving display properties. SOLUTION: The display element includes: a driving substrate 11 having a common electrode 13 and a pixel electrode 16; a counter substrate 21; and an optical modulation layer 30 arranged between the driving substrate 11 and the counter substrate 21. The optical modulation layer 30 exhibits optical isotropy when no electric field is applied, and varies the degree of optical anisotropy in response to application of an electric field. The pixel electrode 16 includes a comb-shaped structure consisting of a comb base part 16A and a comb teeth part 16B. The comb base part 16A and the comb teeth part 16B are formed of opaque material and have a cross sectional shape with round corners.
