PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that optimizes the cleaning capability of a cleaning sheet for cleaning a fixing section and an amount of toner used for cleaning. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: image forming sections YS, CS, MS and KS for forming toner images T on a recording material P; and a fixing section 20 for thermally fixing the toner images to the recording material. The apparatus has a cleaning mode for cleaning the fixing section. When the cleaning mode is set, the cleaning sheet CP is formed such that the image forming section forms a predetermined toner image on the recording material, thereafter, the fixing section thermally fixes the predetermined toner image to the recording material, thereby, while being heated by the fixing section, the toner image is conveyed and thus the fixing section is cleaned. In the image forming apparatus, when the cleaning mode is set, the apparatus changes, according to the condition of the fixing section used, the amount of toner per unit area of the predetermined toner image placed on the recording material used for forming the image by the image forming section.
