PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader capable of effectively preventing failure in the driving mechanism or the like of an original read means while suppressing the increase of a product cost. SOLUTION: The original reader includes: a lower unit 10 provided with a first glass plate 111 and a second glass plate 112 comprising transparent plates; a second image read part 70 provided inside the lower unit 10 freely movably along the surface direction of the second glass plate 112; and a movement regulation means 100 for regulating the movement of the second image read part 70 by engagement with the second image read part 70. The engaged state of the second image read part 70 and the movement regulation means 100 is visually recognized from a window part (the second glass plate 112 or the like, for instance) provided in the lower unit 10.
