Proposed are an apparatus and a method for controlling transmission output in a wireless external modem in accordance with a distance to a user. A mobile wireless modem for controlling transmission output according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: a sensing unit which measures the distance between the user and the external wireless modem; a variable attenuation unit which adjusts transmission output; and a control unit which controls the variable attenuation unit to adjust the transmission output to the preset transmission output corresponding to the distance measured by the sensing unit if the value of the distance measured by the sensing unit is smaller than a reference value.
