摘要 A method of manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium is provided which is capable of improving fineness of a particle diameter and vertical orientation of a perpendicular magnetic recording layer, improving corrosion resistance of the magnetic recording medium, and recording and reproducing high-density information. Provided is the method of manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium (10) of the invention having at least a soft magnetic layer (2), an underlayer (4), an intermediate layer (5), and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer (6) which has a granular magnetic layer including at least an oxide, on a nonmagnetic substrate (1), the method including at least one of: a process of irradiating a surface of the soft magnetic layer with inert gas ions, after forming the soft magnetic layer; a process of irradiating a surface of the intermediate layer with inert gas ions, forming the intermediate layer; and a process of irradiating a surface of the granular magnetic layer with inert gas ions, after forming the granular magnetic layer that constitutes the perpendicular magnetic recording layer.
