The invention provides a method of forming a photonic crystal structure by means of a polymerisable material comprising the steps of: forming a layer of the polymerisable material, the polymerisable material being arranged to experience photoinduced mass transfer upon irradiation with optical radiation; and exposing the polymerisable material to said optical radiation at locations corresponding to a photonic crystal structure to be patterned thereby to form said structure by photoinduced mass transfer.
