PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine, preferably discharging a hydraulic fluid from an oil pressure chamber of a variable vale mechanism during stoppage of the engine regardless of installation position of an oil path control valve. SOLUTION: The variable valve system includes: a valve timing variable mechanism 40 for changing the valve timing VT of an intake valve; and a lubricating device 60 for controlling the supply and discharge state of a lag angle chamber 48 of the valve timing variable mechanism 40 by an oil control valve 63. The lubricating device 60 supplies a lubricating oil to the lag angle chamber 48 or discharges the lubricating oil from the lag angle chamber 48 through a lag angle chamber oil path 74 connecting the lag angle chamber 48 and the oil control valve 63. An auxiliary discharge oil path 81 connected with the lag angle chamber 48 or the lag angle chamber oil path 74 is provided for discharging the lubricating oil to the outside of the valve timing variable mechanism 40 (case chamber 27).
