PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus including a charging apparatus which always generates a fixed amount of discharge, without causing excessive discharges, regardless of the environment, material of a charging member and an image carrier, variations in the resistance value of the charging member and the image carrier in manufacturing, or the number of image forming sheets. SOLUTION: The charging apparatus includes: a charging current detection means 14, that detects a DC-current component and an AC-current component flowing to the charging member 2 through the image carrier 1; an AC-current amount control means 13a; a DC-current amount control means 13b; and an arithmetic calculation means 13c for arithmetically calculates AC-discharge current from a plurality of the AC currents detected. Only the DC current amount, or both an AC current amount and a DC current amount are controlled, based on the summed current of the AC-discharge current and the DC current.
