PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a spacer material for a flat display panel, the material holding two pieces of substrates disposed opposite to each other at a predetermined interval. SOLUTION: The method for producing the spacer material includes: a cutting step of coarsely cutting spun fibers made of a brittle material; a fine powder removal step of removing a fine powder produced by cutting the fibers by use of a shaker or the like; a pulverization step of pulverizing the cut fibers by using a ball mill, vibration mill, jet mill, grinding machine, stone mill or the like; and a classification step of classifying the pulverized minute fibers (minute pulverized material). In the cutting step, while the glass fibers F are loaded with tension by pulling the fibers at both sides of a cut portion Fa, the fibers at the cut portion Fa are pushed and slid on a blade portion 10a of a knife 10 where an array 10b of minute recesses is formed, so as to scratch and cut the cutting portion Fa in one direction.
